What is Sunderland Culture?

Sunderland Culture is a new organisation founded in 2016, created to bring together Sunderland's most important assets and highlight the ambition of the city. They operate many venues in Sunderland each with a different purpose, these venues are the National Glass centre and Northern gallery for contemporary art and Sunderland museum and winter gardens, Sunderland stages, Sunderland cultural partnership, arts centre Washington and the fire station. They run cross-city programmes such as the recent UK city of culture bid and the great place scheme. Their mission is to improve life for everyone in Sunderland through culture.

The Venues

This exhibition will be held and showcased at The Winter Gardens Museum in Sunderland, there is a lot of significance to the location of this event as the venue is operated by Sunderland Culture. The Winter Gardens Museum is situated in the heart of the city, the museum has four floors of galleries and exhibitions so that you can learn the story of the city and its people. Their programme of special exhibitions features both local and national collections. The Winter Gardens Museum holds regular events and activities for all ages as well as a newly refurbished shop and cafe to attract visitors of all ages.

This exhibition will also be held at The National Glass Centre in Sunderland, this venue holds a lot of significance like The Winter Gardens Museum as it is also owned by Sunderland Culture. The National Glass Centre is an iconic free cultural attraction that is situated on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland. National Glass Centre celebrates the origins, growth and history of glass making in the city of Sunderland, you are able to explore the city's rich history of glass making. As well as that you are able to enjoy their international exhibitions programme, which presents the work of leading contemporary artists in glass and ceramics. You can attend one to one glass blowing experiences or take part in one of their friendly glass making, jewellery or craft classes, you can even feel the heat of one of their 1100 degree furnaces during one of the free glass blowing demonstrations. Along with all of this, The National Glass Centre also has a shop and a riverside cafe called The Glass Yard.
